It is not every day that a GCSE student steps out onto the hallowed turf of St James’ Park, but for Year 11 student Joe B, a lifelong ambition became a reality this week.
In front of a roaring crowd of over 52,000 fans, Joe fulfilled a dream that most Newcastle United supporters only imagine: performing the iconic anthem, “Local Hero,” just moments before kickoff.
The atmosphere was electric as Newcastle United prepared to face reigning champions Manchester City. As the players prepared to exit the tunnel, the spotlight turned to Joe.
Handling the pressure like a true professional, Joe delivered a flawless rendition of the Mark Knopfler classic. For any Geordie, “Local Hero” is more than just a song; it is the heartbeat of the stadium. To have a Ponteland High student leading that moment is a massive achievement.
“Stepping onto the pitch at St James’ Park is a dream for millions. To do it with a guitar in hand, playing the anthem that defines the club, is something Joe will never forget.”
Joe’s performance set the tone for a high-intensity match against one of the best teams in the world. While the football on the pitch was intense, for the Ponteland High community, the highlight happened before the whistle even blew.
We are incredibly proud to see one of our own Year 11 students showcasing their musical talent on such a massive stage.
Congratulations, Joe!
