On Tuesday 24th September, Ponteland High School hosted the annual ‘Bee Showcase’ event to share the amazing bee curriculum studied in Y6 and into Y7. More than 130 families arrived along with a number of Pele Trust primary school colleagues and Governors to see learning in Year 7 Science, Geography, Art, Technology and Maths and to explore how the students were using their knowledge acquired in Year 6. Year 7 students articulated how their current lessons utilised their Year 6 knowledge in learning about the Fibonacci sequence, the problem of asian hornets, and the viscosity of honey! Visitors were also able to sample the amazing ‘Honey Chicken’ and ‘Greek Granola Delight’ created by the Junior Masterchef finalists as part of Y6 ‘Bee Week’ in June.
This hive of activity all took place underneath an installation of collage hexagons which showed how the feeder primary schools all came together to create a united honeycomb. This year, we were also joined by Thorsten Rettig, beekeeper and producer of ‘Darras Hall Honey’ who brought samples of his honey from different times of the year and Steve Sykes from Northumberland College Zoo who helped students make seed bombs to produce wildflowers. One of the parents commented: “I’m so impressed by what they have been learning. My daughter is an expert on all-things bee related!” One of the Year 6 teachers said: “I’ve been looking forward to this! I am always so excited to come to the bee showcase and catch up with my ex-students. They suddenly seem so grown up!”
