I was recently at the DIY SOS Big Build reveal in Wallsend. I got this amazing opportunity as I volunteer at True Colours theatre on a Thursday evening and Saturday. True Colours is a charity run by Alisar, a truly inspirational person who noticed there were no opportunities for children with disabilities to become involved in musical theatre.
A couple of months ago DIY SOS said they wanted a project to work on, and at the same time True Colours Theatre group were offered an old derelict building to use. The issue was that the building had no running water or electricity and was a mess with smashed windows etc. This is where DIY SOS agreed to turn this old building into an accessible, calm, purpose built theatre where children and young people with disabilities could come to rehearse and perform. While Nick Knowles, his team and hundreds of volunteers refurbished the new True Colours ' forever’ home, a True Colours choir was put together to perform at the grand reveal.
On Tuesday 11th July it was time to see the finished project, and film the big reveal for the TV show. True colours teachers, volunteers and pupils all assembled in the garden to sing Chosen family and some members danced in front of the choir, while we were filmed. We had the added bonus of not only meeting the DIY SOS team but also stars from Strictly Come Dancing! After our performance we got to see inside, however that’s top secret and we can’t talk about that until the show is aired.
