Harry Potter Night Casts a Spell Over Year 7 and 8 Students

February 13th, 2026

On the evening of Wednesday 11 February, our school was transformed into a world of magic, mystery, and mischief as 40 Year 7 and 8 students gathered for an unforgettable Harry Potter Night. From ancient magical scripts to house rivalries and a certain house-elf in need of a sock, the event was filled with laughter, learning, and a touch of wizarding wonder.

The evening began with one of the most anticipated moments of the night — the Official Sorting Hat Ceremony. Students eagerly lined up to discover where their loyalties would lie: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Cheers erupted as each name was called and houses were assigned. For many students, this moment set the tone for friendly competition and teamwork throughout the evening.

Once sorted, students rotated through a series of magical activity stations designed to challenge their creativity, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of the wizarding world.

Decoding Ancient Runes

One of the highlights of the evening was the Ancient Runes workshop. Students were introduced to the fascinating world of magical symbols and their meanings. Working in small groups, they decoded secret messages written in runic script and even created their own runic name tags.

This activity combined literacy skills with critical thinking, as students carefully analysed symbols and patterns to unlock hidden messages. It was impressive to see their determination and collaboration as they worked to outsmart the coded challenges.

Pin the Sock on Dobby

No Harry Potter celebration would be complete without a nod to everyone’s favourite house-elf. The room was filled with laughter during the lively game of “Pin the Sock on Dobby.” Blindfolded participants were spun gently before attempting to free Dobby by placing a sock in the correct spot.

The game sparked plenty of excitement (and some hilariously misplaced socks), creating a light-hearted break between the more academic activities. It was wonderful to see students encouraging one another and celebrating each attempt, whether successful or slightly off target.

House Spirit and Team Challenges

Throughout the evening, house points were awarded for teamwork, creativity, and enthusiasm. Students proudly represented their houses, working together to earn valuable points. From trivia challenges to mini magical tasks, house spirit was alive and well.

The competitive element encouraged cooperation across year levels, with Year 7 and Year 8 students supporting one another and forming new friendships. It was particularly rewarding to see students step into leadership roles within their houses, guiding discussions and motivating their peers.

A Night to Remember

Harry Potter Night was more than just a themed event — it was an opportunity for students to collaborate, challenge themselves, and celebrate their shared love of storytelling and imagination. The enthusiasm, positive behaviour, and house pride displayed by all 40 students made the evening a tremendous success.

A special thank you goes to the staff who helped organise and run the activities. Their creativity and dedication ensured the night ran smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

As the final house points were tallied and students departed — some still proudly declaring their house allegiance — it was clear that the magic of the evening will linger long after the last sock was pinned on Dobby.

We look forward to many more magical events in the future!
