On Saturday 11 June, eleven Ponteland High School students competed at the Northumberland Schools’ County Championships at Wentworth Stadium in Hexham. Students were selected to represent the Tynedale area of Northumberland after previous success at the district competition in May. The athletes were battling out for the top two spots in each event to gain qualification to represent Northumberland at the inter-counties at Gateshead Stadium next week.
Lucy M. showed her class by finishing 2nd in both the heat and final of the intermediate girls’ 300m. Despite this being the first outdoor season that Lucy has competed in this event, she achieved the prestigious county standard for her performance and will represent Northumberland at Gateshead Stadium next week. Lucy was then joined by Lucia C. to compete in the triple jump. Lucy finished 3rd with Lucia 4th. Lucia also competed in the 80m hurdles earlier in the day, finishing 5th. Last up in the intermediate girls was Mayu L. who finished 5th in her 100m heat.
Over in the intermediate boys, Joe C. raced over the high 100m hurdles to finish 3rd. Ben W. found himself in the fastest 100m heat, where his time of 13.0s would have seen him finish 2nd in heat 1. Elliot K. fresh from racing the mile only three days prior, finished 3rd in the intermediate boys 1500m. James R. finished 4th in the 1st of two 400m heats against all of the eventual medalists. Finally, Nathan E. showed his talent on both vertical and horizontal jumps, finishing 4th in the triple jump and high jump.
In the junior girls competition, Isla G had a busy day competing in three events, two of which had heats and finals! Isla finished 6th in the 100m, 3rd in the 300m and 8th in the long jump. Both Louisa H. (75m hurdles) and Grace G. (200m) cruised through the heats to take 4th place in the finals of their respective events. Grace then went on to finish 8th in the long jump. Middle distance runner Erin B. finished 5th in the 1500m.
In the junior boys, Leighton N. finished 1st in the 4 Kg shot, with a distance of 9.46m. Leighton also finished 8th in the javelin. Oliver C. finished 8th in high jump.
