On Thursday 14th December, 28 students from years 9 to 11 accompanied by Mrs Fraser, Mr Benn and Mrs Briggs set off for Edinburgh airport to board their flight to Munich. This was a much awaited trip, being our first German trip since covid and it did not disappoint!
Throughout the stay, the students were incredible ambassadors for Ponteland High School, and a credit to their families, with impeccable manners and such enthusiastic attitudes at all times.
Friday started with a 6.30am wake up call and the students’ first experience of the very efficient Munich public transport on the tram and underground system. This was followed by a tour of the famous Allianz Arena, home to the Bayern-Munich football team, where the students’ faces lit up to be allowed in the changing room surrounded by football shirts of many well-known players including Harry Kane. Lunchtime was spent at the very festive Christmas markets where many students sought out Bavarian specialities whilst others played it safe in McDonalds! The afternoon saw us set out on a 2 hour walking tour of the city, allowing us the chance to experience the wealth of culture and history that Munich has on offer, and then the chance to do some shopping, whilst trying to take the best selfie or buy the tackiest souvenir!
Saturday saw another early start and a visit to the Olympic Stadium, steeped in history. Some students even took Mr Benn up on his challenge of running round the track in less than 2 minutes. Others had the chance to play football on the ground where Germany won the World Cup in 1974. We then took the tram to the suburbs of the city to a traditional family run restaurant where students ordered their drinks in German, many of them brave enough to try a “Spezi” on our advice.
Trip organier and MFL teacher, Mrs Fraser said "The “Schnitzel und Pommes” went down very well with one student even managing to eat 4! I don’t think I’ve ever known students eat as much! Of course they still had room for Pizza in the evening! They must have worked up an appetite during their walk around BMW world where they had a chance to sit in some of the most expensive cars in the world and see the latest models and designs. We arrived home on Sunday after a fantastic trip with lots of happy memories. It was a real privilege to take this group of students away".
