During a tutorial session on charity and poverty, our Sixth Form students listened to a talk by Colin Herron, a volunteer for the People’s Kitchen in Newcastle. Alongside his position as an academic within the School of Engineering at Newcastle University, he has been a volunteer for the People’s Kitchen for over fifteen years. He explained that life can lead people into difficult circumstances and that so many of the ‘Friends’ are homeless, at risk, unemployed, lonely or living in poverty.
The People's Kitchen offers meals every day of the year and coming to The Kitchen to enjoy a hot meal with people who understand their struggles is a lifeline for them. With so many of our students going on to work, live and study in Newcastle, it was an incredibly informative talk and an excellent opportunity to learn more about this vital charity. In the lead up to Colin’s visit, students collected hats, gloves and socks to be donated directly to the PK. In this particularly horrible weather, they will be much appreciated. Thank you!
