Our Year 12 students took a significant step toward university-level research this week during an intensive study visit to the Robinson Library at Newcastle University. The visit was specifically designed to support students currently undertaking their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a rigorous independent research project that prepares them for the demands of higher education.
Masterclass in Research and Referencing
Under the expert guidance of Newcastle University’s professional librarians, students participated in specialized workshops focused on two critical pillars of academic success:
- Advanced Search Techniques: Students learned how to move beyond basic search engines, utilising academic databases to refine their results and find high-quality, peer-reviewed sources.
- The Gold Standard of Referencing: A dedicated session on Harvard Referencing ensured that students can now attribute their sources with precision, maintaining the highest levels of academic integrity in their EPQ submissions.
The highlight of the day was the announcement that our students have been granted ongoing access to the Robinson Library. For the duration of their A Level studies, Year 12 students will be able to visit the university library independently to use its vast physical collections and quiet study spaces. By bridging the gap between sixth-form study and undergraduate research, this initiative ensures our students are developing the self-reliance needed for the next stage of their journey.
