Year 13 History students explore Newcastle University’s connection to Martin Luther King

18 October 2024

To coincide with Black History Month, our Year 13 Historians spent a day at Newcastle University exploring the links between the university and Martin Luther King and the wider role of photography in the American Civil Rights Movement. It was a unique opportunity to gain a valuable insight into a topic which is the basis of our A level coursework. Students were also able to gain a taste of university life enjoying both a lecture and seminar on the University campus. The day started by exploring why Martin Luther King made a speech at the university in 1967 and why there is a statue dedicated to him on the campus which celebrates the occasion. The work on photography allowed students to explore in depth the purpose and impact of photography at the height of the civil rights struggle. A huge thank you goes to the university team who ran such an insightful and rewarding day.
