Year 9 – GCHQ National Language Competition 2022

14 November 2022

GCHQ’s National Language Competition (NLC) is a week-long event from 7 to 11 November 2022. The NLC is aimed at Year 9 students across the UK, involving teams of up to 4 pupils working together. They tackle a variety of fun, immersive, language-themed challenges, hosted on a virtual platform.

Our amazing Year 9 competitors have tackled a range of language-related puzzles, ranging from easy to difficult. They encountered European languages, languages less commonly taught in schools and even made-up languages! Over a period of five days, our students captured flags to earn points on their language journey. Points will be totalled up and generate rankings on a national leader-board. The team with the most points at the end of the week wins! The winning team will be presented with a trophy by GCHQ Director, Sir Jeremy Fleming, in GCHQ’s building in Cheltenham at the beginning of December. Fingers crossed!

GCHQ is one of the three UK Intelligence and Security Agencies, along with MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) Mrs Davison said  "Maybe some of our students will end up being super spies in the not too distant future!"

Our crafty code-crackers are: Beau H, Noah W, Antal T, Sebastian P, Phoebe E, Ava C, Ruby M, Zoe S, Teagan R, Finn C, Nina M, Abigail K and Emily L.
